Through an iterative process with the clients, we developed a project that met their desire for a greater connection to their large backyard garden and introduced a secondary rental suite with its own entrance all while preserving the front of the building.

The main and second level make up the primary residence. The rear addition containing the kitchen completely opens up to the backyard with a floor-to-ceiling window and door that leads to the cantilevering back deck. It seamlessly ties into the existing building through careful planning and the selection of materials that complement the character of the 1950s home.

The existing second floor planning remains intact, with the new laundry, primary bedroom and ensuite contained within the addition.

A unique aspect to this otherwise narrow urban lot is a designated right-a-way; a remnant of old city planning. This additional width to the north of the side property gives way to the basement walk-out, providing a welcoming, bright entrance to the secondary suite while creating a new sense of community between the clients and their tenant.

While the interior spaces blend old with new, the exterior massing embraces its difference through its contrasting form as a modern, cantilevering box and its bright blue cladding with wood at its base. Expansive windows open up the interior to the exterior that starts to feel like a tree-house within the branches of the large cedar tree.
